"Neely" was the son of Hiram Compton and Janney Shannon. He married Rebecca Jane "Jennie" Patterson on February 7, 1839 in Tazewell Co., VA, by his grandfather, Rev. William Shannon. He was a farmer. Hiram had remained in the Bluestone area of Tazewell Co. when his parents and siblings moved with many of his relatives to Lawrence Co., KY. Neely and Jennie had ten children, eight of whom lived to adulthood. They eventually moved to the Mud Creek area of Falls Mills where they had a farm.

Other children of Neely and Jennie were Sarah A. (1852-) and Robert A. (1854-).
