John was the son of James Harrison Tabor and Nancy Moore Runion. He married Martha A. Compton (daughter of Cornelius Compton and Rebecca Jane Patterson), Caroline Virginia Hollendsworth, and Julia Ann Bailey.

During the Civil War, John served four years in the Confederate Army, Co. C, 5th Virginia Infantry Regiment. He was wounded at the Battle of Chancellorsville in May, 1863 and fought in other major campaigns.

John was a carpenter, waggon and furniture builder, and operated a turning lathe. He acquired a farm (the Roby J. He was executor of his father's will in 1891, and qualified to be guardian of his brother Samuel Grover Tabor's children in 1894. John served on the local election board, as a officer in the Falls Mills Christian Church, and was involved in community civic projects.
