Alfred was the son of Charles Brugh and Sarah Worman. I found ten children for the couple—Joseph (28 Aug 1845), Mary Ann (15 Nov 1846), Frederick (20 May 1848), Joseph Jefferson (13 Dec 1849), Elizabeth Adaline (27 Sep 1852), Emeline (15 Oct 1854-9 Apr 1856), Michael (1 Mar 1856), Alfred (Sep 1858), Louisa (28 Jan 1861) and Artimissa (18 Feb 1863).

I found the family on the 1860 Census, living in Aubbeenaubbee, Fulton Co., Indiana. Charles Brugh, aged 43, was earning a living as a farmer. Sarah, aged 35 (28 on record), was home with their six children—Joseph, aged 14, Mary, aged 12, Jefferson, aged 10, Elizabeth, aged 8, Michael, aged 6, and Alfred, aged 2. Also living with the family was 29-year-old farm laborer Jeremiah Wornom (Worman? Related to Sarah?)

Three years after that census, daughter Artimissa joined the family on 18 Feb 1863. Tragedy struck four months later when the family lost husband and father Charles on 18 Jun 1863, aged 45.

Sarah appeared without him on the 1870 Census, widowed, aged 45, still living in Aubbeenaubee Township. There with her were Jefferson, aged 20, Alfred, aged 11, Louisa, aged 9, and Artimissa, aged 7.

Just before the next census, Alfred also lost his mother Sarah on 20 May 1879.

On 20 Oct 1883, Alfred married Sarah Ellen Davis in Marshall County, Indiana. Sarah was the daughter of Thomas H. and Martha J. Davis. Alfred and Sarah had seven children together (per Sarah on the 1940 Census)—Frederick Elias (21 Sep 1894), Ethel Marie (May 1897), Goldie Artamish "Artie" (28 Jan 1901), Elizabeth Adaline "Addie" (1903), Conda Franklin (31 May 1907), and two unidentified children who were born and died before 1900.

I found them on the 1900 Census, living in Plymouth's Center Township in Marshall Co., Indiana. Alfred Brugh, aged 40, was earning a living as a day laborer. Sarah, aged 34, reported that she had had four children, but that only two had survived to that census. There with their parents were son Fred, aged 5, and daughter Ethel, aged 3.

They were still living in Center Township when the 1910 Census rolled around. Alfred, aged 52, was working as a section hand for the railroad. Sarah, aged 42, reported that five of her seven children were living. There with their parents in 1910 were Frederick, aged 16, Ethel, aged 12, Goldie, aged 9, Elizabeth, aged 7, and Conda, aged 2.

The 1920 Census found them still in Center Township. Alfred, aged 61, was working as a general laborer. Sarah, aged 51, was keeping house. Still living at home with their parents were Ethel, aged 22, Artie, aged 19, Elizabeth, aged 16, and Conda, aged 12. Eldest son Frederick had married wife Etta and they had welcomed the first two of their daughters—Myrtle and Goldie.

They were still in Center Township in 1930, the Inwood area. Alfred, aged 70, was doing some gardening and odd jobs. Sarah, aged 62, was keeping house. Still living at home were daughter Ethel, aged 32 and sewing, and son Condy, aged 22 and working as a plater for a metal works company.

On 20 Oct 1933, Alfred and Sarah celebrated their golden wedding anniversary.

They appeared again together on the 1940 Census, still in Plymouth's Center Township. Alfred, aged 81, was retired. Sarah, aged 72, reported that she had had seven children. Only daughter Ethel, aged 42, was still living at home with her parents.

Three years after that census, death parted the couple, claiming Sarah on 13 Jul 1943 at age 75. Alfred lived another eight years without his helpmate and companion, departing this earth in 1951 at age 92 or 93.
