Fred was the son of Alfred Brugh and Sarah Ellen Davis, who married on 20 Oct 1883 in Marshall County, Indiana. Sarah was the daughter of Thomas H. and Martha J. Davis. Alfred and Sarah had seven children together (per Sarah on the 1940 Census)—Frederick Elias (21 Sep 1894), Ethel Marie (May 1897), Goldie Artamish "Artie" (28 Jan 1901), Elizabeth Adaline "Addie" (1903), Conda Franklin (31 May 1907), and two unidentified children who were born and died before 1900.

I found them on the 1900 Census, living in Plymouth's Center Township in Marshall Co., Indiana. Alfred Brugh, aged 40, was earning a living as a day laborer. Sarah, aged 34, reported that she had had four children, but that only two had survived to that census. There with their parents were son Fred, aged 5, and daughter Ethel, aged 3.

They were still living in Center Township when the 1910 Census rolled around. Alfred, aged 52, was working as a section hand for the railroad. Sarah, aged 42, reported that five of her seven children were living. There with their parents in 1910 were Frederick, aged 16, Ethel, aged 12, Goldie, aged 9, Elizabeth, aged 7, and Conda, aged 2.

The 1920 Census found them still in Center Township. Alfred, aged 61, was working as a general laborer. Sarah, aged 51, was keeping house. Still living at home with their parents were Ethel, aged 22, Artie, aged 19, Elizabeth, aged 16, and Conda, aged 12.

Fred was no longer living with his parents and siblings. On 21 Jun 1916, he had married Etta Jane Berkeypile in Marshall Co., Indiana. Etta was the daughter of Lorenzo James Berkeypile and Eliza Jane Swoverland. I found five children for Fred and Etta—Myrtle J. (b. ca. 1917), Goldie May (28 Mar 1919 – 12 Mar 1965), Hazel Irene (2 Apr 1921 – 11 Mar 1996), Helen Marie (b. 19 Mar 1924), John Frederick Brugh (26 May 1930 – 31 May 1930).

On his 5 Jun 1917 WWI registration, Fred E. Brugh, aged 22, reported that he was living at 709 N. Walnut St. in Plymouth, Marshall Co., Indiana. Noted were a wife and one child (daughter Myrtle, who was physically disabled). Fred was employed as a telephone operator for Penn Railroad. He was described as tall and slender, with dark brown eyes and black hair.

The 1920 Census placed Fred’s little family at the same N. Walnut St. address in Plymouth. Fred Brugh, aged 25, was noted as a telegraph operator. Etta, aged 24, was home with their two young daughters—Myrtle, aged 3, and Goldie, aged 9 months.

They were still at the same address when the 1930 Census taker knocked on their door. Fred Brugh, aged 35, was working for the telephone company. Etta, aged 33, was keeping house. There with their parents were Myrtle, aged 13, Goldie, aged 11, Hazel, aged 9, and Helen, aged 6. Not noted on census records were if a woman was with child. Etta gave birth to son John a month after that census was enumerated on 2 Apr 1930. Son John was born on 26 May. Sadly, he was born with congenital spina bifida and only lived for five days. So sad.

The 1940 Census still had the family in the same place. Fred Brugh, aged 45, was noted as a radio telegrapher for the public. (Western Union, perhaps?) Etta, aged 44, was keeping house. Still at home with their parents were all four girls—Myrtle, aged 23 and working in the office of a metal manufacturing company, Goldie, aged 21, Hazel, aged 18 and doing housework for a private family.

On his 27 Apr 1942 WWII, Fred Elias Brugh, aged 47, was still living on N. Walnut St. in Plymouth. He reported that he was working for the Plymouth Battery Company. Wife Etta was noted as that person who would always know his address. He measured in at 5’ 8” tall and weighed in at 127 lbs., with brown eyes and black hair. Also noted was a scar on his left hand. Ouch!

Fred and Etta’s daughter Goldie, born with a “congenital mal-development with a spastic condition”, was considered an “invalid” and never married. She died in the family home before both of her parents on 12 Mar 1965 at age 46. Daughter Hazel married Paul Leroy Travis and they had two daughters together named Dawn Ann and Mary Ann. Paul died tragically in an auto-train collision on 28 Jul 1956. I am not sure what happened to daughter Helen except that she married (unknown) Hollett.

On 21 Jun 1966, Fred and Etta celebrated their golden wedding anniversary. They shared fifty-five years together before death parted them, claiming Fred on 17 Aug 1971 at age 76. Etta lived on, not passing into the light until 16 Apr 1991 at age 95.
