Claud was the son of Charles Nelson and Amanda Watson and was raised in Polk County, Oregon. In 1914 he married Laura Harris, who had been previously married. He help raise two stepchildren: Oliver J and Lois E Rawles. Claud and his family moved to Longview, Washington, where he worked as a carpenter for Long-Bell Lumber Co. They moved again to Portland and then to Clackamas, Oregon, where Claud was a carpenter for WPA home construction in 1940. Claud died in 1952 at age 80.
