Amanda was born and raised in Cass Twp, Fulton County, Illinois. Her parents were John D. and Rachel Watson.

Amanda first married Joseph Totter in 1877 in Fulton County, Illinois, and had a son named Floyd in about 1879.

Amanda was the second wife of Charles Nelson Tharp. They married in about 1881 and had five children: Claude, Maude, Claire, Bertha, and John. They lived in Independence, Polk County, Oregon.

Charles died in 1912, and Amanda moved to Portland, Oregon. She returned to Polk County in around 1925, and died soon afterward at age 66.
