John was raised in the town of Independence, Oregon. His father died when he was 12, and he and his mother moved to Portland by the time he was 18. As a young man he worked in the ship yards and then as a driver for a rubber company. He was tall and slender and had brown eyes and brown hair.
In about 1919 John married Helen Jean. They had a daughter Margaret Jean, who later married a Mr. Chapman.
In about 1934 John married Ethel L. Wilson. They lived in Portland and had two sons, Jack W., and Richard P.
John died in Portland at age 50.
