Bertha was the fourth of five children of Charles Nelson and Amanda Wolcott Tharp. She was born in Polk County, probably on the family farm, and lived almost all her life in that county.

In 1913 she married Leif Finseth, who ran the dry goods store started by his father and became mayor of Dallas, Oregon, a state senator, and a member of the State Board of Higher Education. They had one son, Raif Paul. After Leif died in March 1959, Bertha moved to Portland. She died six months later at age 70.

Her obituary was published in the Oregonian on Sep. 11, 1959.
