Mrs. Barkema Rites Held Monday, P. M.

Mrs. Hans Barkema of Jewell, died at the hospital Story City, Friday, May 31, where she had been a patient for four weeks. She had been in ill health for the past eighteen months. Death came at 8:15 a.m., cancer being the cause of her death. She had lived in the Jewell community for 49 years.

Funeral services were held Monday, with a brief prayer service at the Becker funeral home at 1:30 p.m., and at the Federated church at 2:00 p.m., with the Rev. Mark Wetteland, officiating.

William Buckels sang a solo at the funeral home and also at the church. Burial was in Evergreen cemetery beside her husband.

The pallbearers were: Keith Anderson, Kenneth Headley, Lester Barkema, Rickard Barkema, and Claude Abramson.

Mary Christina Albers, the daughter of Dirk and Mina Albers, was born May 1, 1890, at Kamrar, Iowa, and died May 31, 1957, at Story City, at the age of 69 years and 30 days. When only nine months old, she moved with her parents to Palmer, Iowa, where lived nine years. She then lived eight years with her parents in Oklahoma before coming to Jewell, where she lived 49 years.

She was married to Hans Barkema on February 3, 1909, at Webster City, Iowa. To this union, five children were born, three of whom survive.

Survivors are her three children Merle Barkema, Stuart Barkema, and Donald Barkema, all of Jewell; two sisters and four brothers, Mrs. Emma Ryder of Paul, Minn.; Jake Albers, of Griggs, Oklahoma; Carl Albers of Port Arthur, Texas; Pete Albers, Port Arthur, Texas; Dick Albers, Port Arthur, and Mrs. Minnie Beaumont of Groves, Texas; and seven grandchildren. They are Roger and Merle Richard, sons of Mr. and Mrs. Merle Barkema, Jacqueline, Jerilyn and James, children of Mr. and Mrs. Stuart Barkema, and Ruth Diane and Victoria Lou, daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Donald Barkema.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, infant son, an infant daughter, two brothers, two half sisters and three half brothers.

Mrs. Barkema was a member of the Federated church, the Rebekab Lodge, and American Legion Auxiliary.
