Philip B. Whitener was born 1794 in Lincoln Co., NC and was the son of Benjamin Whitener and Mary Magdalena Whisenhunt. Philip B. and his fourteen siblings were named in his father's will. Philip B. inherited 103 acres of land from his father's estate. The marriage bond for Philip and his bride, Nancy Catherine Guthrie, was dated September 4, 1826 in Lincoln Co., NC. Nancy was the daughter of Nelson and Catherine Lowe Guthrie.

Philip sold his land in Lincoln Co. September 15, 1846 and moved to MS where he and his family are listed in the 1850 Tippah Co., MS census. In the 1830 and 1840 Lincoln Co., NC census there was a daughter born about 1828, whose name is unknown. Children listed in the 1850 and 1860 Tippah Co., MS census include: Mary Elizabeth, William S., Frances, Sarah D., Nancy C., Jane I., Thomas P., and Julia E Whitener. All of the children were born in Lincoln Co., NC except Thomas P., and Julia E., who were born in Tippah Co., MS.

Mary Elizabeth Whitener married Thomas Rainey, William S. Whitener married Julia A. Hopkins Dec. 27, 1860, Sarah D. Whitener married Robert Augustus Proctor Oct. 1, 1856, Jane I. Whitener married S. H. Hudson July 19, 1868, Thomas P. Whitener married Rebecca Jane Ragan March 9, 1876, and Julia E. Whitener married Richard B. Proctor March 9, 1868. All these marriages were in Tippah Co., MS.

Records in NC say that Philip B. Whitener married Malinda Gross and remained in NC. That was a cousin, Philip Whitener, who married Malinda Gross. Philip B. Whitener signed his marriage bond "P. B. Whitener" which proves that he was the son of Benjamin Whitener, since most of Benjamin's sons used the initial "B". It was not known in NC that Philip B. Whitener had moved to MS until one of his descendants in Texas contacted Anne Williams McAllister in Hickory, NC in 2008. Anne was the author of "Through Four Generations", a history of Henry and Catherine Weidner (Whitener) and their family. The book also has a history of Michael Weidner, another early pioneer in Lincoln Co., NC. Philip B. Whitener was a grandson of Michael Weidner.

The last known record of Philip B. Whitener was the 1866 Mississippi state census. It is assumed he died before 1870 since he is not in the 1870 census. He was probably buried in the Mount Moriah Cemetery in Walnut, Tippah Co., MS where some of his children and grandchildren are buried, but a gravestone does not exist for him.
