Geraldine L. Wells, known as ‘Jerry’ to friends, and everyone she met she considered a friend, passed away Sunday, Jan. 29, 2012. She was born in Columbus, Ind. on Feb. 13, 1912. After the passing of her mom she remained to help her father raise her siblings. She married Donald Wells on Aug. 25, 1940, having a son, Don M. Wells.
Jerry, Don and son moved to Hillsdale and purchased an existing shoe business in downtown Hillsdale. From then on it was known as Wells Shoes for over 40 years. Jerry worked in the business until her eighties. Jerry was a hands on person, she not only sold shoes, she also did the accounting and purchased shoes for the business. She always surprised the guys that would be in for work boots; here she would come, this little lady, with boot boxes stacked above her head. She cared for each customer as an individual with individual needs. After a while she knew them by name and could tell their shoe size and what they liked to wear.
After all that, she was a great mom, always there when Don would be out of school and caring with a spotless home and a homemade meal on the table at the end of the day. Jerry loved her College Baptist Church and was active, while she could, in the church, in the quilting group and in the bible study groups. Weeds beware!! Jerry had an on going dislike for weeds and leaves in her yard! She would be down on her knees, at 88, yanking and pulling until there was not one weed left in the entire yard.
Survivors include a sister, Emogene Stockhover of Columbus, Ind.; a brother-in-law, Homer (Peter) Harms of Fort Myers, Fla.; a sister-in-law Norma Stockhover of Columbus, Ind.; and children, Donald Wells, Deborah Wells, Zach Byers and Garrett Byers, all of Hillsdale.
She was preceded in death by her husband Donald Wells; her parents; brothers, Donald Stockover and Edwin Stockover; a sister, Mary Helen Harms and a sister-in-law, Harriett Stockhover.
I know that mom is now with Lord Jesus Christ and her beloved husband Don.
Funeral services for Geraldine Wells will be Friday, Feb. 3, 2012 at 11 a.m. at the College Baptist Church with Pastor Jason Mekelburg officiating. Internment will follow at the Oak Grove Cemetery in Hillsdale. The family will receive friends for visitation Thursday from 6 — 8 p.m., at the funeral home.
