Born Charles Albert Lawrence, the son of James and Agnes (Hart) Lawrence, Father Jerome (Hieronymus) Lawrence, O.S.B., was a Benedictine monk of St. Bernard Abbey in Cullman, Alabama. He came south from his native Pennsylvania in 1901, and entered the Order of St. Benedict at St. Bernard's, starting his novitiate on June 29, 1903. Fr. Lawrence was ordained a Catholic priest on May 31, 1910. He served as a chaplain at the college, and went out as a missionary priest to Dante, Virginia; St. Ann's Parish in West Virginia; and St. George Catholic Church in Lynch, Kentucky. In 1933, he became Pastor of Annunciation Catholic Church in Columbus, Mississippi, where he died unexpectedly in 1937, age 57.
