Sarah Ann Elizabeth King McBurnett

Sarah Ann McBurnett, 90, passed away about 7:30 a.m. the morning April 15, 1942, from a broken right hip. She had been a resident of Nueces County, Texas for the past 21 years.

Since the death of her husband, Mrs. McBurnett had lived with Lee & Marian McBurnett in Petronila, Texas and later in an apartment provided by Lee McBurnett for her and her daughter, Laura Massey, in Robstown, Texas.

Sarah was born October 7, 1851 in Bowdon, Georgia. (Carroll County) She was the daughter of Joseph King from North Carolina and Indiana G. Langston King from Mississippi. Miss Sarah King married Jefferson McGee McBurnett on December 26, 1871. Jefferson was a postmaster, and later worked in a sawmill. They moved to east Texas in 1894 where there were many lumber mills.

She was preceded in death by her husband Jefferson McBurnett who died in 1915 at the age of 64, and her son Bart McBurnett who died in 1939 at the age of 57.

In 1942, she was survived by 12 of her 13 children, as follows: Minnie Lucinda Carroll (husband James Monroe) of Bremen, Georgia; Fannie Carroll (husband Oscar Bruce) of Rockdale, Texas; Bud McBurnett of Alabama; Laura Massey of Robstown; Nick McBurnett of Rockdale, Texas; Neal McBurnett of Miles, Texas; Cleve McBurnett of Laredo, Texas; Beatrice Britton (husband Charlie) of Robstown; Lois "Dovey" Frierson (husband Felix) of Haskell, Texas; D.M. McBurnett (wife Claribel) of Corpus Christi, Texas; Lee McBurnett (wife Marian) of Robstown; and Myrtle Rutland (husband Cullen) of Corpus Christi. Sarah McBurnett was also survived my 51 grandchildren and 50 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 6:00 p.m. the same day, April 15, 1942 at the Baptist Church in Robstown, with the Rev. Ed Wilson officiating. Internment was in the Sharp community near Rockdale, Texas. Arrangements were handled by Gibson Funeral Home.
