One of the cities oldest and best known citizens passes away Wednesday morning.

Mrs. Amanda Wright, one of the Checotah's oldest and best known residents closed her eyes in the last long sleep Wednesday at the home of here son, Clarence, in the east part of the city. For the past several weeks Mrs. Wright had been in very serious condition during which time she was indeed a patient sufferer.

Through her sweet and lovable motherly disposition she was familiarly called "Grandma" Wright by a majority of older Checotah citizens.

For a number of years she managed the Wright Hotel, east of the Katy (Railroad) depot and during her regime the hotel was a popular place for many an old time traveling man will now bow his head in sorrow when the news of her death is learned.

Mrs. Wright was born in Warren County, Indiana, October 15, 1840, being 79 years, one month and eighteen days of age at the time of her death. She married A. Wright (Alpheus) at Marshelfield, Ind., in 1866. Together with her husband and children they came to the Old Indian Territory in 1889, locating in Checotah in 1892 which place has since been her home. Mr. Wright preceeded her in death on March 24, 1900.

To this union were born eight children, six of whom survive to mourn her loss as follows: Mrs. B A. Davis (Minnie), of Galveston, Texas, Clarence and Earnest of this city, Mrs. M. A. Butz (Cora) of Wapanucka, Okla., Mrs. J. B. Outler (Delilah) of Davis, Okla., and Mrs. J. H. Sharp (Bessie) of Corenth, Miss. She also leaves four step children: George, Cassius and C. J. Wright (Cyreneus Judge) of this city, and Mrs. T. E. HENRY (Hannah) of Danville, Ill.

Mrs. Wright was a member of the Christian Church and at all times took an active part and interest in religious matters. She was also a charter member of the local Eastern Star chapter.

The funeral services are being held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Wright this afternoon following which the remains will be tenderly laid to rest in Greenlawn Cemetery.

"On September 18, 1863, Amanda's (1st)husband, Perry Songer, died. A few days later both her boys died - Harley on September 30, 1863, and Milem on October 1, 1863. On Janruary 2, 1864 Amanda gave birth to Perry's 3rd child, Delilah. Amanda married (2nd) Alpheus WRIGHT on October 2, 1866. This was the 3rd marriage for Alpheus WRIGHT, having lost Huldah RATLIFF and her sister Sarah RATLIFF by death.
