Staislaus A. Carbaugh, 62, proprietor of Leppo Dry Cleaners, Hanover, and native of Berlin Junction, was found dead seated in his automobile which was parked on a road in the Pigeon Hills off the Hanover-Abbottstown pike at 1:45 a.m. Tuesday. His death, according to Coroner Lester J. Sell, was caused by asphyxiation from carbon monoxide gas.
The discovery was made bu Carbaugh's son-in-law, William Trump, Hanover. Officers say that a search was started Monday night for Mr. Carbaugh when a set of keys to his car was found with a note address to his son, Alphonzo Carbaugh, Hanover, where he had visited Monday evening between 5 and 10 o'clock, and a second note addressed to his remaining four children, indicating he was going to take his life. Trump found Carbaugh slumped in the car and notified Hanover Police, who in turn notified state police, State Trooper James Corbett, York investigated. He stated a hose had been fastened to the exhaust pipe on Carbaughs's car and pulled through the right rear window, enabling fumes to get into the car. All the windows had been closed tightly.
The local police officers notified Coroner Sell, who investigated and took the car and the body to Hanover, after which the body was released to Funeral Director William A. Feiser.
Mr. Carbaugh was a son of William H. and Catherine Breighner Carbaugh, late of Berlin Junction. He was affiliated with Hanover Lodge 227, L.O.O.M; the Gettysburg Aerie, F.O.E and the Hanover Home Association.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Minnie Mummert Carbaugh; five children; Mrs. William Trump, Paul Carbaugh, Mrs. Raymond Miller, Mrs. Jesse Wentz and Alphonzo Carbaugh all of Hanvoer, nine grandchildren, and the following brothers and sisters; Joseph, Frank and John Carbaugh, all of New Oxford; Alphonzo Carbaugh, Harriburg, Sister Eusebnius, Paridise; Sister Dorothy, Lewistown; Mrs. Charles Schrader, New Oxford and Mrs. George Munchel, York.
Private funeral services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at
the William A. Feiser funeral home, Hanover. The Rev. Dr. John S. Tome, pastor of St. Mark's Lutheran church, will officiate. Interment will be in Rest Haven Cemetery.
