Note: The 1910 Memphis Ward 3, Shelby Co., Tennessee census, taken on 20th April, says that Elsie L. [Louise] Alston was 6 months old, so she would have been born around October, 1909.

'Uncle Billy' Alston, Civic Leader, Dies at 70
William Henry (Uncle Billy) Alston, 70, for years active in the business, civic and fraternal life of Atlanta, died Thursday at the residence, 567 Moreland Ave., NE, after an extended illness.

Mr. Alston, known to thousands as Uncle Billy, came to Atlanta a half century ago from hi home in Midway, Ala., and for a time served as a reporter in the old Atlanta Georgian.

In recent years he was head of the International Detective Bureau, a private investigation agency.

Uncle Billy was a life member of the Scottish Rite Order and the Shrine. He served for many years as a leader in Masonic charity work.

He was a member of the First Methodist Church, the Atlantic Chamber of Commerce, and was a lieutenant colonel on the staff of both Gov. Marvin Griffin and Gov. Vandiver.

He also was a member of the Sojourner's Club; Palestine Lodge No 486, F. & A.M.; John Burr Council No. 13, R. AND S.M.; the Fulton Lodge, F. AND A.M.; Atlanta Commandary No. 9, K.T. the Order of Eastern Star.

FUNERAL SATURDAY
For years he had been a member of the Atlanta Athletic Club.

Funeral services will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday at Spring Hill, with the Rev. Quinn Pugh officiating.

Graveside services and burial will be held at Midway.

Survivors include his wife, the former Nina Ray Bigford; three stepchildren, John Alston Rollins, Lavan Alston Rollins and Michael Alston Rollins; a brother, Truman Alston, Bogalosa, La., and two sisters, Miss Alma Alston and Mrs. Genie May Branscomb, both of Midway.
