Son of Levinah W. Jackson Murphy and Jeremiah Burns Murphy. His mother and a brother, Lemuel also died.
Among those in his family that survived were three sisters and two brothers: Sarah Ann Charlotte Murphy Foster, Harriet Frances Murphy Pike Nye, Meriam Marjory "Mary" Murphy Covillaud, William Green Murphy and Simon Peter Murphy.
