Leona Amelia Gunneson was born on July 4, 1924 in Willow Lake Township the daughter of Theodore "Ted" and Elizabeth (Kosel) Stern. She was confirmed in 1939. She attended country school. Leona married Kimball Gunneson on September 20, 1945 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Sleepy Eye. The couple made their home in Sleepy Eye. Leona enjoyed shopping, baking, the "Price Is Right" polka dancing, gardening and jewelry. When Leona turned 65 her diabetes caused her to have a severe stroke. She has made her home at the Sleepy Eye Care Center for the last 24 years. This last January 1st there was an accident that caused her much pain and anguish. Leona was a very strong and courageous woman. She had a warm smile and gentle laugh which will be sadly missed by all that loved her.
Survivors include her children, Joyce (Bill) Polchow of Walker, Stanley (Joyce) Gunneson of Sleepy Eye, Marlene (Ray) Walter of Sleepy Eye, Darlene Beranek of Courtland and Betty (Dale) Braun of Courtland, 16 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren, 5 step grandchildren, sisters, Arlene VanRycke of Moline, IL and Ruth Dalugge of Florida. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Kimball, Son, Roger, grandson, Jamie, son-in-law, Steve Beranek, brothers, Herman, Warren, Glen, Wilbert and sisters, Bertha and Elizabeth.
