Biography:
Jonathan Charles Dicken, was born on the farm of his parents Jesse and Mary (Donahoe) Dicken in Bedford County, Pennsylvania on July 12, 1833 A Pittsburgh lawyer, his Bedford Inquirer obituary says he was called to the bar in Bedford County in 1852. He served a term as register, then as recorder, and was prothonotary. In 1856 he moved to Pittsburgh but did not immediately practice law. He took a position with the Pennsylvania railroad as a subordinate clerk to Andrew Carnegie. Later he returned to the practice of civil law.

J. Charles., as he preferred to be called, married Mary Linton Chambers (Jul 1841 - Apr 9, 1907), the youngest daughter of William Chambers and Fanny (Hamilton) Chambers, immigrants from Scotland. Together they had at least 8 children:
Fannie Woods Dicken, married Pittsburgh Lawyer James Maclean Shields
Mary (Minnie) Dicken, who died as an infant
Jessie Hamilton Dicken, married prominent banker Sturley Cuthbert Armstrong
William Chambers Dicken, who practiced law with his father
Clara Anderson Dicken, married Albert Horne Burchfield of Horne’s Department Store
Jeanette Irvin Dicken, married Alfred R. Fraser, Treasurer of Oliver Steel and Iron
Alice Neiper Dicken, married William McKibben Ewart, of S.Ewart & Co. Wholesale Grocers
Emilie Dilworth Dicken, married Charles Henry Kerr, a well-known building contractor.

At the time of his death at age 74 on April 4, 1908 J. Chas. Dicken was one of best known and among the oldest attorneys at the Allegheny County Bar. He had argued a case in the morning and returned to his office at 425 Fourth Avenue for lunch. While seated in a chair, he was suddenly struck with heart failure. His son William summoned the doctor who pronounced him dead at 1:45 PM.
