Mary Linton Chambers was born in Pittsburgh, the youngest daughter of William Chambers (1801 - May 7, 1880) and Frances (Fanny) Hamilton (1803 - Jul 20, 1886) immigrants born in Scotland They had a home near Fort Pitt and the Point. Mary married Pittsburgh Lawyer Jonathan Charles Dicken about 1860 and had at least 8 children:

1. Fannie Woods Dicken, married Pittsburgh Lawyer James Maclean Shields
2. Mary (Minnie) Dicken, who died as an infant
3. Jessie Hamilton Dicken, married prominent banker Sturley Cuthbert Armstrong
4. William Chambers Dicken, who practiced law with his father
5. Clara Anderson Dicken, married Albert Horne Burchfield of Horne’s Department Store
6. Jeanette Irvin Dicken, married Alfred R. Fraser, Treasurer of Oliver Steel and Iron
7. Alice Neiper Dicken, married William McKibben Ewart, of S.Ewart & Co. Wholesale Grocers
8. Emilie Dilworth Dicken, married Charles Henry Kerr, a well-known building contractor.
