In 1910 John (4 y, born in Illinois), his father Nick Auwerda (51, Holland), his mother Katie (49, Holland) and his siblings Barney Auwerda (14, Holland), Richard (7, Illinois) and Grace (5, Illinois) lived in Cicero, just west of Chicago, Cook County, Illinois.

The Nicholas Auwerda farm was in 1915 located at 3800 S. Central Ave. [near Route 66], Mud Lake in Chicago Sanitary District [in or near Cicero]. A photo of the family Auwerda in front of the farm is available in Robert P. Swierenga's book "Dutch Chicago" (published in 2002), page 556.

His mother Treintje Auwerda died in December 1925 in Cicero, Cook County, Illinois at the age of 65 years.

John married on 28 August 1929 at the age of 24 years to the five years younger Eike "Ethel" Dykstra, born on 20 February 1910 in Chicago, daughter of Ebbe "Edward" Dykstra and Hendrika "Ricky" Iwema.

In April 1940 John Auwerda (34 y, cemetery keeper), his wife Ethel (30 y) and their children John N (8, Illinois), Shirley J (5, Illinois) and Elaine (0, Illinois) lived at a rented home at Roosevelt Road in Berwyn, a city west of Cicero and Chicago, Berwyn Township, Cook County, Illinois. They lived in 1935 at the same place.

His wife Eike died on 15 April 1985 at the age of 75 years in Winfield, a village west of Berwyn and Chicago, Du Page County, Illinois. John Auwerda died in September 1985 in Lombard, a western suburb of Chicago, in Du Page County too, Illinois at the age of 80 years.
