He was born Hendrik Auwerda in June 1884 in the country village of Hoogersmilde in the midwestern part of the Dutch northeastern province Drenthe, son of the 26 years old skipper's hand (schippersknecht) Nicolaas Cornelis Auwerda and Trijntje Meilof. Source: scan of his birth certificate.

In June 1900 Henry Auwerde (16 years old, born in June 1883 [has to be: 1884] in Holland, factory hand), his father Nicholas Auwerde (35, Nov 1885, Holland, factory hand), his [step] mother Theresa (40, Aug 1861, Holland, mother of 1 living child), his half-brother Barnie (5, Aug 1895, Holland) and sister Elizabeth (19, Nov 1881, Holland) were living in a rented house at South Turner Avenue, West Town[ship], located just west of Chicago's center, Ward 10, Cook County, Illinois. They all immigrated in 1896.

On November 20, 1907 Henry Auwerda married in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois at the age of 23 years the two years younger Annie Wiltger, who had Dutch parents too.

In April 1910 Henry Auwerda (25, immigrated in 1900 [?], ice man at an ice house), his wife Annie (23, Illinois, mother of 2 living children), daughter Teresa (1, Illinois) and son Jacob (3 months) were living in a rented house at 6712 Aberdeen Street in Ward 32 of -south- Chicago, Cook County, Illinois.

In February 1920 Henry Auwerda (35, immigrated in 1900 [?], farmer), his wife Annie (33) and their children Theresa (11), Jacob (10) and Jeannie (8, Illinois) were living on a rented farm at Highland, North Township, Lake County, located in the extreme northwestern part of Indiana.

Henry Auwerda divorced before 1930 from Anje Wiltjer, but apparently she kept his surname.

In April 1930 the 45 years aged and divorced Henry Auwerda (45, immigrated in 1900 [?], truck farmer on own account] was living as boarder at the home of the Dutch couple John (36, laborer at an auto factory) and Jantien Hoogeveen (22) in Highland, Lake County, Indiana.
In 1930 his ex-wife Anna Auwerda (43, divorced) lived in Highland too, with their son Jacob Auwerda (20) and daughter Jeanette Auwerda (19).

In April 1940 Henry Auwerda (55, divorced, farmer) was living on his own farm, worth $10,000 [!], in Highland Town, North Township, Lake County, Indiana. Housekeeper Effie Yonker (43, Holland, divorced) and hired hand Henry Dexter [Dykstra] (55, Holland, single) lived with him. They all three lived in 1935 in the same house.

In 1942 Henry Auwerda and his "wife" Effie Yonker were living at Ridge Road in Highland, when he was administrated on a WW II Draft Registration Card.

On March 16, 1949 Henry Auwerda married in Lake County, Indiana the12 years younger Effie Yonker, whose maidenname was Aafke Hoogeveen and who divorced between 1930 and 1940 from Lambert Yonker. All three were born in the Nerherlands.

On September 29, 1957 Henry and Effie Auwerda received Communion at the Dutch Reformed Church of -probably- Hammond, Lake County, Indiana. Effie was baptized there on the same day.

Henry Auwerda died in October 1960 at the age of 76 years of cancer at the Our Lady of Mercy Hospital in Dyer, Lake County, Indiana. He resided then with his wife Effie, who declared his death, at 2532 Ridge Road, Highland, in which town he lived for 48 years.
