He was born in August 1895 as Berend Cleveringa in the country village Pieterburen, in the northwestern part of the Dutch northeastern province Groningen, son of the unmarried and almost 35 years aged servant maid Trijntje Cleveringa. The declaration of Berend's birth at the townhall in Eenrum was done by the midwife who was present at his birth.

His mother Trijntje Cleveringa married about 1896 in Illinois, USA, very probably in or around Chicago, at the age of 34 years to the three years older widower Nicolaas Cornelis Auwerda, who was also born in the northeastern part of the Netherlands.

In June 1900 Barnie (4 y, born in August 1895, Holland), his mother Theresa (40, born Aug 1861 [1860] in Holland), his stepfather Nicholas Auwerde (35 y [42!], born in November 1865 [1857!] in Holland, factory hand), and his stepsiblings [Sara] Elizabeth (18, Nov 1881, [Smilde] Holland) and Henry (16 y, born in June 1883 [1884, Hoogersmilde] in Holland, factory hand), lived at a rented home at So. Turner Ave. in West Town, just west of Chicago's center, Ward 10, Cook County, Illinois. They immigrated in 1896.

His mother Theresa and his stepfather Nicholas Auwerda had on 29 October 1902 in Drexel, just west of Chicago, Cook County, Illinois son Richard Auwerda.

In 1910 Barney Auwerda (14 y, born in Holland), his stepfather Nick Auwerda (51), his mother Katie (49) and his siblings Richard (7, Illinois), Grace (5, Illinois) and John (4, Illinois) lived in Cicero, just west of Chicago, Cook County, Illinois.

On 5 June 1917 farmer Barney Auwerda, 21 years aged, residing at Cicero and employed by his father, was administrated on a WW I Draft Registration Card.

Barney Auwerda married on 21 November 1917 in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois at the age of 22 years to the one year younger Agnes Voordewind, who was born in Holland too.

In 1920 Barney Anwerda (! 24 y, immigrated in 1896), his wife Agnes Ruwerda (!! 23 y, immigrated in 1914) and their daughter Theresa G Ruwerda (!! 1 y, born in Illinois) lived at a rented home in Cicero, just west of Chicago, Cook County, Illinois.

In 1930 Barney Auwerda (34), his wife Agnes (33, Holland) and their children Theresa G (11, Illinois), Peter A (7, Illinois), Nicholas C (5, Illinois) and Gertrude E Auwerda (0, Illinois) lived at the home of his father Nickalas Auwerda (72, widower) in Berwyn, just west of Chicago, Cook County, Illinois. Daughter Theresa G was born on 16 September 1918 in Cicero and daughter Gertrude Eleanor was born on 1 August 1929 in Oak Park in Berwyn Township. Son Peter Andrew was born on 21 March 1923, in Oak Park too.

His mother Treintje Auwerda died on 25 December 1925 in Cicero, just west of Chicago city, Cook County, Illinois at the age of 65 years. His stepfather Nicolaas Cornelis Auwerda died in August 1933 in Berwyn, Cook County, Illinois at the age of 75 years.

Berend remarried before 1942 to the about six years younger Harriet G.

The 46 years aged Berend (!) Auwerda was in 1942 administrated on a WW II Draft Registration Card. He was then living with Harriet G. Auwerda at 1914 S. Oak Park in Berwyn [Township?], Cook County, Illinois and his employer was National Laundry Co. in Cicero.
His second wife Harriet G. Auwerda died in November 1964 in Broward County, on the east coast of Florida at the age of about 63 years and was buried in the catholic Queen of Heaven Cemetery and Mausoleums at Hillside, Cook County, Illinois. Berend (!) Auwerda died in January 1967 at the age of 71 years. His last known residence was at the village of Maywood, 10 miles west of downtown Chicago, Cook County, Illinois. He was also buried in Queen of Heaven Cemetery and Mausoleums at Hillside, next to Harriet, on her right side. On his right side is a marker without a deathdate for his daughter Gertrude E. Auwerda (1929-2012), but in December 2013 M. Arvidson heard from the Heaven Cemetery's administration that Gertrude wasn't buried there, so it's likely that she was buried in Arkansas, where she died.
