Cornelis Auwerda was born in June 1889, at Paradijssluis, Havelte, probably on board of his father's ship, in the southwestern part of the Dutch northeastern province Drenthe, the last of four children and the second son of skipper Nicolaas Cornelis Auwerda and Trijntje Meilof. He is named for his grandfather Cornelis Petrus Auwerda.
The 25 years aged painter Cornelis Auwerda married on 5 September 1914 in Ruinen, in the southwestern part of Drenthe, to the three years younger seamstress (naaister) Kaatje Kok, born in Meppel, daughter of laborer Jan Kok and Johanna Derks.
They had -at least- two sons, Jan and Nicolaas Auwerda.
Painter Cornelis Auwerda died in September 1940 at the age of 51 years in Meppel, in the utter southwestern part of Drenthe. His widow Kaatje Kok died there too in July 1974 at the age of 82 years.
