Nicolaas Cornelis Auwerda was born in November 1857 in the country village of Smilde, located in the midwestern part of the Dutch northeastern province Drenthe, son of the 29 years old shopkeeper Cornelis Petrus Auwerda and Sara Elisabeth Cornelia Hatzmann, 28 years old. On September 20, 1881 The 23 years old skipper's hand (schippersknecht) Nicolaas Cornelis Auwerda married in Smilde to the also 23 years old Trijntje Meilof, born in Smilde, daughter of laborer Hendrik Meilof and Henderika Vos.

Nicolaas and Trijntje had the following children:
* Sara Elisabeth Auwerda, 13 November 1881, Smilde
* Hendrik Auwerda, 28 June 1884, Hoogersmilde
* Henderika Auwerda, 8 April 1887, Smilde, died 21 June 1890, Assen, Drenthe;
* Cornelis Auwerda, 6 June 1889, Paradijssluis, Havelte, Drenthe, died 26 September 1940, Meppel, Drenthe.

In 1881 and 1884 Nicolaas Cornelis Auwerda was a skipper's hand, in 1887 and 1889 a skipper.

On 24 January 1890 his wife Trijntje Meilof died at the age of 32 years in Dieverbrug, Dwingeloo, Drenthe.

On July 16, 1896 Nicolaus Auwerda remarried in Illinois, Cook County, very probably in or around Chicago, at the age of 37 years to the three years younger Tryntje Wottlers [maiden name Trijntje Cleveringa], also born in the northeastern part of the Netherlands and widow of coachman of Jacob Johannes Wolters, who died on March 14, 1890 in the city of Groningen, in the northeastern part of the Netherlands, at the age of 37 years. Trijntje Cleveringa had on August 16, 1895 in Pieterburen, province Groningen, Netherlands as an unmarried servant maid son Berend Cleveringa. So Trijntje emigrated between August 1895 and July 1896 to the USA. Her brother Allert Cleveringa (born 1867, in the USA called Albert) emigrated in April 1895 to the USA.

In June 1900 Nicholas Auwerde (35 years old [has to be: 42!], born in November 1865 [has to be: 1857!] in Holland, factory hand), his [second] wife Theresa (40, Aug 1861, [1860, Pieterburen] Holland) and the children Barnie (4, Aug 1895, [Pieterburen, Groningen] Holland), [Sara] Elizabeth (18, Nov 1881, [Smilde] Holland) and Henry (16, June 1883 [1884, Hoogersmilde] in Holland, factory hand), were living in a rented house at South Turner Avenue, West Town[ship], just west of Chicago's center, Ward 10, Cook County, Illinois. Barnie was born Berend Cleveringa on August 16, 1895 in Pieterburen, Groningen, son of the unmarried servant maid Trijntje Cleveringa.

On October 29, 1902 Nicholas and Thereasa had in Drexel, just west of Chicago, Cook County, Illinois son Richard Auwerda.

In 1910 Nick Auwerda (51), his wife Katie (49) and their children Barney Auwerda (14, Holland), Richard (7, Illinois), Grace (5, Illinois) and John (4, Illinois) lived in Cicero, just west of Chicago, Cook County, Illinois.

In September 1914, when his son Cornelis married in the Netherlands, Nicolaas was a truck farmer (tuinier). The Nicholas Auwerda farm was in 1915 located at 3800 South Central Avenue, Mud Lake in Chicago Sanitary District. A photo of the family Auwerda in front of this farm is available in Robert P. Swierenga's book "Dutch Chicago" (published in 2002), page 556. In June 1917 Nicholas is still a [truck] farmer, residing at 3800 S Ave. [today W Ogden Avenue, til 1977 part of Route 66], Cicero, with his son Barney as employee.

On December 25, 1925 his wife Treintje Auwerda died at the age of 65 years in Cicero, located just west of Chicago city, Cook County, Illinois.

In 1930 Nickalas Auwerda (72, widower), his son Barney (34), his daughter-in-law Agnes Auwerda (33, Holland) and his grandchildren Theresa G (11, Illinois), Peter A (7, Illinois), Nicholas C (5, Illinois) and Gertrude E Auwerda (0, Illinois) were living in Berwyn, just west of Chicago, Cook County, Illinois.
