John Conneally was born March 31, 1866 to Patrick and Mary McLaughlin Conneally in Norfolk, Connecticut. He died sometime after 1930 in California.

In the town of Norfolk's vital statistics a boy, "Johnny," was born to Patrick and Mary Conneally, both listed as age 36. Patrick was listed as a "Laborer."

According to the church records provided by the Franciscan Friars of St. Joseph's Monastery in
Winsted, CT, the child's name was recorded in Latin "Joannem" Connelly [sic]. He was baptized April 15, 1866, godparents were again in Latin Lucas Connelly [sic] and Maria Kelly.

This "Lucas Connelly" is Patrick Conneally's brother, Luke.

Johnny is listed in two U.S. Census for Norfolk, CT. 1870 he is age 4. 1880 he is age 14.

A wealth of information on the Conneallys has come to us through third cousins to us. They are descended from
Patrick's brother Luke Conneally (1845-1927).

A cousin speculates her father, Francis Conneally (1886-1970), who personally knew and was the
nephew of Patrick, wrote the following:

"Patrick Conneally came to Nebraska in 1887 or 1889 with his eldest* son, John who disappeared in 1890. John was not located until 1930. John had driven a stagecoach from Sacramento to Tucson and was tomahawked. He may have been unconscious for days and days. He had a scar and scrape on the right side of his head.

[*correction: Thomas was the eldest, born 1860.]

1885 Nebraska State Census we see Patrick [& maybe John?] in Greenwood, Cass County, Nebraska.

Another cousin said that she heard from her
grandmother (Johnny's sister Mary Agnes Conneally Enright) that Patrick had left his family and
gone out to the mid-west with one of his sons.

1900 U.S. Census for Santa Barbara, California, 34 year old John Conneally is working on the railroad as a teamster, living with a whole bunch of men on the same page of the census doing the same thing.

1930 U.S. Census taken in April there is a John Conneally, age 64 (exactly the right age as ours),
managing what appears to be a boarding house at 900 East Rio Street, Los Angeles, California.
He's single. Both his parents were from "Irish Free State." But (drat) he was born in Missouri.
Maybe he lied? Oh well. Interesting.

Since we don't know where he's buried, I'm putting my great uncle John here with his parents in St. Joseph's in Pittsfield.
