Elinor T. Pine age 92 of Prairie du Chien passed away Thursday, September 19, 2013 at the Prairie Maison Care Center. She was born October 19, 1920 in Turkey River, IA, to Mathias and Catherine (Harasche) Adams. She was one of ten children. Her early years were spent on the family farm. She excelled academically; but sadly, due to the Great Depression, she was only allowed to complete the Eighth Grade.
She married John Spoden of Luxemburg, Iowa, on May 3, 1937, with whom she had two sons. She actively participated in the family dairy farm until 1959, when she and John retired from farming.
John (Jack) tragically died from injuries he sustained in a forestry accident on November 6, 1963. His death left a painful void for the family. On June 8, 1968, she married her second husband, James V. Pine of Prairie du Chien, WI. They enjoyed a happy marriage until his death on January 4, 1995.
Elinor was never a stranger to hard work, a habit engrained in her as a child. She enjoyed working at Pin's Tavern in Luxemburg, IA, and later for the Prairie du Chien Convalescent Center. Before moving to Wisconsin, she had also worked as a receptionist in the office of Dr. B.C. Luehrsmann, Dyersville, IA.
She was an active member of her parishes of Holy Trinity in Luxemburg and later St. Gabriel's in Prairie du Chien. Elinor enjoyed many years as an avid gardener. She was a self-taught successful and competitive Bridge player; her card skills were honed early in her life through numerous rounds of Euchre with family and friends. She was a consummate volunteer at church, the public library and hospital, the American Red Cross Blood Mobile and the historic Villa Louis.
She loved spending time with her six grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.
Besides her husbands, Elinor was also preceded in death by siblings, Dorothy (Art) Meyer, Lawrence (Renee) Adams, Hilda (Henry) Nolte, Arthur (Ila) Adams, Agnes Adams, Leona (Kenneth) Walters and Adeline (Lyle) Knapp. She is survived by her sons, Gary J. (Darlene) Spoden of Guttenberg, IA and Dr. James E.(Janet) Spoden of Sautee Nacoochee, GA, her brother Clarence (Elaine) Adams of Dubuque, IA, her sister Teresa Moser (Virgil), Marion, IA. Additional survivors include grandchildren: Laurie (Jeff) Krapfl, Dyersville, IA; David (Claudia) Spoden, Guttenberg, IA; John (Rhonda) Spoden, Luxemburg, IA; Elizabeth Spoden (fiance Marc Lennon), Newport, RI; Erika Spoden (Lance CPL Justin Cowart, USMC), Okinawa, Japan; Natalie Spoden, Tel Aviv, Israel; seven great-grandchildren, three great-great grandchildren and numerous nephews and nieces.
A visitation is planned for10:00 AM, preceding the funeral Mass at 11:00, Tuesday, September 24, 2013, at St. Gabriel's Church of the Holy Family Parish in Prairie du Chien, WI, Rev. James Weighner officiating. Interment will be in the Holy Trinity Cemetery in Luxemburg, IA.
