John E. Lewis, son of Joseph and Nancy Lewis, was born on February 5, 1876, near Bufford, Ohio, and departed this life August 17, 1956 near Durham, at the age of 80 years, six months and 12 days.
He was united in marriage to Stella Shaper, June 10, 1886. To this union was born five sons: Virgil Lewis, Durham; Albert Lewis, Durham, Arthur Lewis, Amarillo, Texas; and five daughters: Mrs. Georgia Cockrell, Durham; Mrs. Lucille Lenk, Oklahoma City, and Mrs. Dora Timmons, Mangum. His wife, a son and 2 daughters preceded him in death.
He also leaves 29 grandchildren, two brothers, Joseph and Ira Lewis of Sardina, Ohio, two sisters, Mrs. Rhoda Bailey of Canadian, Texas and Mrs. Gertie DeBord of Reydon, also several nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.
Mr. Lewis and family moved to Oklahoma and took up a homestead in 1901. It was on this homestead he departed this life.
