Louie Allen was born March 1, 1887 in Cape Girardeau, son of James and Mary (Patterson) Allen. He was the third of seven children in a family that included a sister, Mamie Adams, and half siblings; Cora Parker, Ada Wood, Sally Katherine McMikle, Willie Baker and Lee "Otis" Black.
On July 24, 1907, Louie Allen was united in marriage to Myrtle Mae Rayburn, who preceded him in death in 1960. The couple had four children; sons, Arthur F. Allen, Oscar Allen, Ariel Edward Allen and daughter Thelma Allen.
Louie Allen eventually remarried to Ocie Patterson.
