He named most of his boys after Republicans.
Henry Clay, Benjamin Franklin, Abraham Lincoln, Aaron Burr and John Alva Edison.

He died as a result of catching pneumonia after he caught on fire while burning leaves.
He was called "Johnny"
They lived on Figsboro Rd. in Henry County, VA.
Everyone in the area called him "Uncle Johnny"

He would always ride around on a horse or a mule in Henry County, VA.
He was short, so he built a platform that he could step up on to get on his horse.......or mule...which he rode bareback!!!
He played the fiddle and loved Irish music.... he swore he was Irish!

Here is a note my mother wrote about John and his wife:
"They were elderly when I was 8 or 10.
She gathered herbs and used them for medicine.
He was sooo "IRISH". He rode a mule bareback and played the fiddle--lots of jigs. Laughed like Santa Claus - - belly and all!"
Mom also said that after dinner he would put on a bright red vest which meant it was time to play the fiddle !!
