Mrs. Hayes passed away Friday July 5, 2013. Born in Lexington County, she was a daughter of the late Jacob Early and Martha Irene Shealy Leaphart. She was a member of Mt. Horeb United Methodist Church, former S.S. teacher, choir member and communion steward. She retired from the Finance and Accounting Office at Ft. Jackson, and loved to fish and garden.
Surviving are her husband, Melvin B. Hayes, daughters, Rene Littell (Brian), Lexington, Toni Bass (Robby), Gilbert and Abby Fitts (Walton "Skip"), Gilbert, sisters Eleanor "Wiggie" Wessinger, Lexington, Myrna Leaphart, Gilbert, brother, Gerald O. Leaphart, Sr., Gilbert, grandchildren, Robert and Morgan Littell, Hunter and Rachel Bass, Kayla, Meagan, Brooks and Clayton Fitts, great grandchildren, Chelsea and Patrick "Pat" Smith.
She was predeceased by brothers, Wyman A. Leaphart, Sr., and Bivens G. Leaphart, Sr., sister, Aileen Hancock.
