The was the son of John Scott and Elizabeth Menearay. John came with his family across the plains in 1848. The family settled in Salt Lake City and later in Millcreek, Utah. On January 12, 1874, John married Fannie Mariah Ellis. She was born July 19, 1849 in Waldron, Sussex, England, the daughter of John Edward Ellis and Hannah Barber. She and her parents arrived in Utah in 1864, and she worked for a family in Millcreek where she met John. They moved to Millville, Utah in 1876; and John became active in the community serving as Justice of the Peace. He homesteaded in Clarkston and the family were there part of the time. Fannie's life centered around her husband and children. Following a long illness, Fannie died on February 7, 1894 and was buried in Millville, Utah.

Following Fannie's death, John William married Marinda Vilate Weaver Hargraves, the widow of Alexander Hargraves. They moved to Wapello, Idaho in 1906; and their home became the social center of the community. It was at this time that John William developed asthma and was unable to work the last few years of his life. Following his death, Marinda sold the home and remained in Wapello to be near her children. She died June 16, 1945 in Pingree, Idaho.
