Henry J. Hemler, one of Adams county's most respected citizens, died suddenly at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Alverta Roth, in McSherrystown on Friday afternoon at 3:20 o'clock. Death was caused by paralysis, which he was afflicted with on Thursday night, Henry J. Hemler was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Christian Hemler, and he was born on the old Hemler homestead in Mt. Pleasant township on February 13, 1830, his age consequently having been 85 years, 5 months and 4 days. In early life he was married to Miss Louisa Burkee, only daughter of the Joseph Burkee, Sr., of McSherrystown; and to this union were born seventeen children, twelve survive.

Mr. Hemler engaged in farming and also carried on the butchering business. Two years ago he moved from the old farm at Brush Run schoolhouse, to McSherrystown, where he made his home with his daughter. Thru life he was a stauch Democrat and held the office of tax collerctor of Mt. Pleasant township and was also elected a member of the Mt.Pleasant school-board for a number of years.

He leaves the following children: Mrs. John J. Garrety, Wichita, Kansas; Mrs. William Weirick, St. Mary's Kansas; F. C. Hemler, Los Angeles, Cal; Mrs. M. J. Smith, Columbia, Pa; Mrs. Chauncey Stough, York; Mrs, Charles Harerman, Mrs. Harry Hoffnagle, Hanover; Miss Annie Hemler, Baltimore; Mrs. Alverta Roth, Joseph J., Harry P. and William F. Hemler of McSherrystown. Also, one brother, George Y. Hemler of McSherrystown, There are 34 granchildren.

The funeral was held on Monday, Requiem Mass in St. Mary's Church at 9 a.m., the Rev. Fr. Reudter officiating. Interment was made in the family lot at Conewago Chapel.
