Philip Hemler was the son of Christian Henry and Catharina (Fleshman) Hemler. He was born in Mount Pleasant township, and comes of an old and much respected family of Adams county. He followed the butchering business in Littlestown for a number of years but in about 1878 he moved to the Codori farm in Cumberland township where he lived until about 1899 when he moved to a residence on West Middle street in Gettysburg.

He was the husband of the former Catharine Mary Eltz.

He was survived by 11 children: Rose Aumen, Josephine Brickner, George Hemler, Catherine Oram, Jerome Hemler, Agnes Redding, Mrs. George Brown, Mary Mullen, Mary Slentz, Annie Storm and William Hemler.

Funeral services were held at St. Francis Xavier Catholic church with interment in the church cemetery.

His obituary was printed in the Tuesday, August 5, 1902 edition of The Gettysburg Compiler, Gettysburg, PA.
