Mrs. Smith was the daughter of Henry J. and the late Louise J. Hemler of Mt. Pleasant, and was the eldest of 17 children. She was educated in the local schools and finished her education in St. Joseph Academy, McSherrystown.
On Christmas day, 1881, she was united in marriage to Henry I. Smith, in the historical Conewago Chapel, Rev. Father Endes of venerable memory, officiating. To this union was born, about 12 years later, Master Henry J. Smith. Mrs. Smith is survived, besides those mentioned above, by nine sisters and four brothers, as follows: Mrs. Lulu Garrity, Wichita, KS; Mrs. Alice S. Smith, Columbia, PA; Mrs. Clara Weirich, Paxico, KS; Mrs. Sadie Smith and Mrs. Alverta Roth, McSherrystown; Mrs. Daisy Hagerman and Miss Mattie Hemler of York; Miss Annie Hemler of Baltimore; Mrs. Maggie Hoffnagle of Mt. Pleasant; Harry and William of the old homestead in Mt. Pleasant, Joseph H., McSherrystown, Francis C. of Los Angeles, CA.
Mrs. Smith was a faithful member of the Immaculate Conception Church, this place, since her marriage and for many years was the organist in that church.
Her funeral took place on Monday morning at 10:15, interment being made in the Catholic Cemetery. after a High Mass of Requiem, Rev. Father Martin officiating.
It is not the purpose of the writer of this article to make a long
obituary notice, but the passing of a life as conscientiously lived as the one now closed calls for a passing comment by one who as closely associated with the deceased as was the writer who had every opportunity to observe the tenderness, sympathy, care and charity she showed to those in need of them, often closely veiled to hide their nature, impels me to say that any community is always the better for a life of this kind having been lived therein,
The editor desires to extend his most sincere thanks to the good
neighbors and friends of Mrs. Smith for the many grateful acts of charity and kindness shown her during her long illness, extending over six months. Also for the profusion of flowers in many appropriate and beautiful designs during her illness and those placed upon the casket.
