"Aged Spartansburg Woman Died Sunday - Mrs Myrtle (sic) Smith, aged 82, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs Myrtle Bates in Spartansburg, at 11:35 am, Sunday. She had been ill for about two months. She was born on August 22, 1856, and most of her life was spent in Warren county. Her husband, Frank Smith, died several years ago. She leaves two daughters, Mrs Bates with whom she resided, and Mrs J S Canfield of Sherman, NY, a son, John M Smith of Orlo Vista, Fla, nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. There are also two sisters, Mrs A J Brown and Mrs Bertha Morton of Union City. Arrangements for funeral services will not be made until word is received from the son in Florida."

"Spartansburg, March 2 - The funeral of Mrs Permilla Smith, born August 22, 1856, was held Thursday afternoon at the home of her daughter, Mrs Myrtle Bates, with whom she made her home. The home was filled to capacity with relatives, friends and neighbors, who gathered there to pay their last respects to this honored elderly lady, who had always been a real mother to her five children, two of whom have passed away. The casket was covered with many beautiful flowers. Rev Herbert Schuckers brought out many kind deeds she had performed during her Christian life. The following acted as pall-bearers: Carl Bates, Victor Canfield, Jack Canfield, Elton Bates. Interment in Excelsior cemetery. The following relatives were present from a distance: Mrs A J Brown, Miss Lulu Wallace, Mrs Bertha Morton, Arthur Cox of Union City, Miss Thelma Alexander of Hydetown, Mr and Mrs James Bell of Corry, Mr and Mrs J F Canfield of Sherman, NY. Mr and Mrs John M Smith of Orlo Vista, Fla, the former a son of the late Mrs Smith, were unable to attend due to the distance."
