"AGED SPARTA TOWNSHIP RESIDENT PASSES AWAY - F C Smith, aged 71, who spent the most of his life in Crawford county, died at 6:25 o'clock Wednesday evening at the home of his daughter, Mrs John Bates in Sparta township. He was born near Meadville and followed farming. A wife, three daughters and one son survive, as follows: Mrs Bates, Mrs E A Alexander of Titusville, Mrs J F Canfield of Sherman, NY, and J M Smith of Titusville. The funeral services will be held Saturday at 11 am at the Bates home and interment will be made in the Excelsior cemetery at Cutler's Corners on the Spring Creek road."

"Spartansburg, Dec 21 - Funeral service was held in memory of F C Smith at the home of his daughter, Mrs John Bates, west of town, Saturday at 11 am, conducted by Rev W L Updegraff, pastor of the Methodist church. Mrs E E Maitland and Mrs James Platt, accompanied by Mrs Steadman, sang 'Face to Face' and 'Shall We Gather at the River,' two of his favorite hymns. Interment was made in the Excelsior cemetery, John Bates, J F Canfield, Donald and Alton Bates, Willison Burlingame and Neil Peck acting as pall bearers. Those from a distance to attend were Mr and Mrs J F Canfield and son, Victor, of Sherman, NY; H G Hunter, daughter and two sons, Mrs A J Brown, Mrs Bertha Morton of Union City; Charles Smith of Riceville; Mr and Mrs E W Alexander, J W Smith and wife and son of Titusville. The funeral party was met at the church at Excelsior by the father of the deceased, who was 94 years of age the day his son died, and by a sister, Mrs Theodore Catlin and Miss Mona Catlin."
