"Mrs John Bates - Mrs Myrtle Bates, 87, of Spartansburg, died Saturday evening in Corry Memorial Hospital following an extended illness. She was born July 14, 1879, in Eldred Township, Warren County, the daughter of Frank and Permelia Wallace Smith. On April 8, 1897 (sic) [April 8, 1898], she married John Bates. He died March 8, 1933. She was a member of the Spartansburg Methodist Church. She is survived by two sons - Elton Bates of Union City, RD 3, and Carl Bates of Whittier, Calif; two daughters - Mrs James (Elsie) Bell of Corry, and Helen Bates of Spartansburg; a sister, Mrs Mona Canfield of Dunkirk, NY; one grandchild and one great-grandchild. Three sons, Ray Bates, Donald Bates and Jackson Bates, died previously. The funeral service will be conducted at 2 pm today in the H Richard Hays Funeral Home in Spartansburg with Rev H Lewis Hewitt of the Spartansburg Methodist Church officiating. Interment will be in Rose Hill Cemetery at Spartansburg."
