Marine Pvt Joseph Philip Gehrig served in the 5th Marine Brigade in France during WWI.

Joseph P. Gehrig, age 97, a resident of the Manitowoc Health Care Center, formerly of 1111 N. 12th St., Manitowoc, died Thursday afternoon, August 31, 1995, at the Manitowoc Health Care Center.
Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 am. Tuesday, September 5, 1995, at Holy Innocents Catholic Church. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Rev. Gerald Foley with burial at Calvary Cemetery, Manitowoc.
He was born August 1, 1898, in St. Nazianz, son of the late Bernard and Rose Heinzen Gehrig. For 19 years he was employed at Medusa Cement Company in Manitowoc. He then worked for several years for the Manitowoc County Board of Education, retiring in 1963. He married Theresa E. Neuser October 12, 1928, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Silver Lake. She preceded him in death on April 25, 1989. Joe served with the United States Marines during World War II from 1917 to 1919. He was a member of Holy Innocents Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus Council #710 and was a charter member of the Society of St. Vincent DePaul Society.
Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, James and Susan Gehrig, Alexandria, Va., Dr. Robert and Jean Gehrig, Wynanskill, N.Y.; one daughter and son-in-law, Lorraine and Roy G. Fricke, Manitowoc; one brother, Herman Gehrig, Sheboygan; three sisters and one brother-in-law, Ann and Peter Bartkus, Holiday , Fla., Margaret Pribyl, Cicero, Ill., Marlene Schultz, Rockford, Ill., 17 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, along with other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Theresa in 1989, four sons, three daughters, three brothers and five sisters.
Friends may call at the Holy Innocents Catholic Church on Tuesday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service at 10:30.
The Harrigan Parkside Funeral Home assisted the family with funeral arrangements.
Memorials would be appreciated to Holy Innocents Catholic Church, St. Vincent DePaul Society or the donor’s choice.
