After graduating from Pullman High School she started saving for nursing school. She met Claude Richard Cunningham at a local USO dance, and they were married in 1941. They had four children together, Diane, Beverly, Daniel and Jeffrey. Jan later adopted Brian (a special needs 9-year old) once the other children were off on their own.
Graduating from Spokane Community College as a Licensed Practical Nurse, she dedicated her life to nursing, helping care for veterans, the aging and the physically and mentally disadvantaged. She owned the Westview Nursing Home which she operated for 30 years and then donated the property to Habitat for Humanity. Janice was the beneficiary of many honors and awards during her lifetime of caring and giving.
An active member of Saint Peter's Catholic Church, she volunteered at All Saints Elementary School, enjoyed a long time membership in the Golden Single's Prayer Group and served as a Eucharistic Minister.
One of 16 children born to Fred and Jennie Austin, at the time of her death, she was survived by three sisters, five children and many grandchildren.
Graveside service was held at Holy Cross Cemetery 9-13-2011 at 3:00 p.m.
