WWII Naval Veteran (WAVES)

The 6th of 16 children, Peggy grew up in Malden, Washington. During WWII she joined the WAVES.

In 1968, her husband Fritz (USAF) retired and the family moved to San Antonio. She completed her BA and earned a Masters in Counseling Psychology. Over the next 25 years, she taught English, British Literature and was a school counselor. She valued her work with young people.

After Fritz's death in 1999, she moved to Houston. She was highly creative and enjoyed sewing, painting and stage directing. As a woman ahead of her time, she championed women's issues, organic foods and exercise early in her life.

She loved people and followed her belief that it is better to laugh than to cry.

She was married three times. First to Chris Anderson in 1937, later to Peter Hayden and then to John Robert "Fritz" Friedrich. She is survived by her two daughters and one son.
Margaret Ida ("Peggy") Friedrich died on her birthday, December 17th, 2011.

She was born in Malden, Washington in 1919 and is survived by sisters Audrey Austin of Spokane, WA and Karen Penniman of Spokane, WA, children Teresa Hayden of Seattle, WA, Diane Friedrich Citek of Houston, TX, John Friedrich of San Antonio, TX, three grandchildren and one great grand daughter.

After serving as a WAV during WW II and supporting herself as an Xray technician, Peggy married her life-long partner John Robert ("Fritz") Friedrich, an Air Force Officer.

She traveled the country, including Alaska, and Europe while raising three children. Upon her husband's retirement in 1968, the family moved to San Antonio and she completed her BA and earned a Masters in Counseling Psychology. Over the next twenty-five years, she taught English at Harlendale High School, South San Antonio High School, taught British Literature at San Antonio College, and was a School Counselor at Terrell Wells Middle School. She retired in 1992, and after her husband's death in 1999, moved to Houston.

In her younger years, Peggy loved the adventure of traveling and expressed her highly creative nature in sewing, painting, and stage directing. Later, she greatly valued her work with young people and sought to help each student find his or her unique talents. She enjoyed the company of others and followed her belief that it is better to laugh than to cry. Peggy was a woman ahead of her time: a champion of women's issues, organic foods and exercise long before it was cool or even acceptable. She was a dreamer and a searcher, often best described as energy in motion, and those of us who knew her were fortunate to be along for the ride. She will be greatly missed.
