Gladys was born in Hartford CT and was the 10th of 11 children of William Elias Tucker,a Hartford police officer and civil war veteran and Jennie Martha Stratton. She attended Brown business college and worked as a secretary and as a stenographer before she was married to Holland Earl Shaw, a chef from Canada and WWI veteran from 3-11-1925 until his death in 1969 after a battle with cancer. They had 4 children (2 daughters and 2 sons), all raised in Moodus, CT, in a house built by Holland and later had 12 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren. Her daughters were Grace Shaw Lechner 1927-2015 and Gladys Shaw Jodoin 1929-2013, her sons are Holland Shaw Jr who died in 2006 and Robert, her eldest. She moved to Lee County FL in 1985 to live near her children. She was an expert seamstress and made dresses for all of her grand-daughters and taught both of her daughers to sew as well. She had impeccable taste and would never leave the house unless she was dressed to the 9's and fully made up with her hair done. She remained very active until the end of her life, riding her bike every day and avidly keeping up on current news events as well as cooking. She enjoyed a good debate and had a very dry sense of humor.
