Born the 4th of 10 children of Albion Joseph Shaw (1851-1942) and Mary Ann Melville (1863-1938) who were married September 9, 1882 in New Brunswick Canada but were of Scottish heritage, the Shaw Clan. He immigrated to the US in 1910 working as a cook on the railroad. He then served in WWI. He met Gladys Ola Tucker in Hartford, CT and they married 3-11-1925, together they had 3 children (a son and 2 daughters) he also adopted, and raised as his own, her eldest son from her previous marriage. She told me that the reason she fell in love with him and married him was because of his ability to bond with her son and that he "was so good with him". He was a chef by trade. He built the family home in Moodus, CT on Bashan RD where they lived until they retired to Sarasota FL in the early 1950s. He never returned to Canada but I have heard that his mother never stopped looking for him to come home, she sat in the front window of their home and said she was waiting to see her "Holly" come walking down the road. He developed colon cancer but remained active right up until only weeks before his death in 1969 which is a testament to how strong willed he was. He lived his life with determination and a will to succeed. Even during the depression with 4 children to raise, he was always employed and always provided for his family. At his funeral in 1969, the song "Whiter Shade of Pale" was played on the First Church, East Haddam's organ, and whenever I hear that song today it makes me think of him. He left a lasting legacy and has 13 grandchildren and many great grandchildren whom all show signs of his strength and determination.
