Gladys was the loving mother of 3 children and grandmother of 4. Her nickname "babe" came from her being the baby of her family (as the youngest of 4 children) and it stuck with her throughout her life, her nieces and nephews referred to her as "aunt babe". She grew up in Moodus,CT and graduated from Nathan Hale High School in 1947. She was a community leader, having been the president of the Elliot Hospital Associate's volunteer organization in the 1980's, in Manchester NH after her career in the insurance industry. She then had another career as a travel agent which allowed her to travel the world extensively as well as go on many cruises. She and her second husband moved to Florida in 1994. While there she never slowed down. She founded the ladies' 9 hole golf association at Heron's Glen, the community they lived in, as well as the Socialites group which was a monthly lunch group that had a different speaker each month about varying interesting topics. She was happiest when she was busy and helping others. She was involved with the book club, dinner groups, went to every function given at the Heron's Nest, the club at the community where they lived. She was a gifted seamstress and made many of her children's and grandchildren's clothes as well as her own. She also made porcelain dolls, oil paintings and was talented at cooking and home décor. She died after a year long battle from complications from subdural hematoma. She is survived by a daughter, son in law, 3 granddaughters a grandson, a sister, a brother (she was pre deceased by another brother) and many nieces and nephews and I am sure she is very much missed by her friends at Heron's Glen in Ft Myers Florida. She was laid to rest with her son and daughter who predeceased her in 1976 and 2010 respectively and their father to whom she was married for 25 years. She always told me that she wanted this poem as her epitaph:Do not stand at my grave and weep I am not there. I do not sleep. I am a thousand winds that blow. I am the diamond glints on snow. I am the sunlight on ripened grain. I am the gentle autumn rain. When you awaken in the morning's hush I am the swift uplifting rush Of quiet birds in circled flight. I am the soft stars that shine at night. Do not stand at my grave and cry; I am not there. I did not die.
