Ellen Josephine Swanson was born on 6 April 1899, the eldest of eight children of John Albert Swanson (1873-1916) and Mary Borup Swanson (1879-1959). She married William Patrick LaVelle (1877-1946) on 4 September 1933 in Poteau, Oklahoma. They had one daughter, Mary Ellen (b.1939). She was widowed in 1946. Ellen died from stomach cancer on 27 March 1967 in Minneapolis, MN at the age of 67, and was interred at St. Mary's Cemetery.
