Jerry Ronald McAllister, 36, a native of Decatur and head football coach for the Dunlap, Iowa High School, collapsed and died during a game at Schleswig, Iowa, Friday night.
He was stricken on the field during the game and taken by ambulance to the Crawford County Hospital in Denison, where attendants said he was dead on arrival. Doctors attributed his death to a heart attack.
News of the coach's death did not reach the team until after the game. His team went on to win the game 51 to 0.
McAllister was in his fifth year at Dunlap High School. Dunlap principal Robert Jackson termed McAllister "a real topnotch coach who will be missed." The Dunlap school was dismissed Monday for memorial services held in the auditorium at 10:00 A.M. Following the services, the body was taken to Decatur for interment in Hillcrest Cemetery. The Masonic lodge officiated at the services.
Jerry Ronald McAllister (known as Nannie) was born December 30, 1932, to Mr. and Mrs. William McAllister in Decatur. He died September 1969 at Schleswig, Iowa.
He attended school in Decatur and graduated in the class of 1951. After leaving school, he entered the Army and served in Japan and was discharged in 1955. He entered Wayne State College after his discharge.
In 1957, he married Marilyn Schuler, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Otto Schuler of Decatur. He graduated from Wayne State College in 1959 and began his teaching career in Walthill, Nebraska; then taught in Prairie City, Iowa before he went to Dunlap.
The McAllisters made their home in Dunlap for the past four years, where he was the head football coach and taught industrial arts.
He is survived by his widow Marilyn; three children, Elisabeth, 11; Mark, 8; and John, 4; three brothers, Paul and William of Sioux City, Iowa and Donald of Branson, Missouri; and two sisters, Mrs. Ed (Pauline) Wanamaker of Blair and Mrs. Steve (Ella) Serbeck of Omaha.
