Nellie Pauline McAllister was born on a farm west of Decatur, on September 11, 1924, to William and Pearl (Little) McAllister.

She attended school in Decatur and Sioux City, Iowa, and because she had four brothers, family life included lots of football games and other sports activities.

While babysitting for her younger cousins, the children of Roscoe and Marie (Wanamaker) Little, she met Ed Wanamaker. They were married October 24, 1944 in Dakota City, Nebraska. After his discharge from the Navy, they returned to Decatur, where their first child, Gayle, was born.
