The date of the headstone indicates his date of birth was 15 Nov 1858. This is not correct according to the 1870, 1880 and 1900 census records. All three of these census records as well as his passenger immigration list in New York put his date of birth about 1848.

Enoch was the son of an Thomas D. Griffiths and Elizabeth Thomas Griffiths James. He was brother to Mr. Thomas David Griffiths and Elizabeth Griffiths Roberts. He was also possibly brother to John Griffiths.

Enoch and his family immigrated from Wales to the United States after his father died in Wales. They arrived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on 25 Sep 1864 after a stop in Queenstown, Cork, Ireland to pickup additional immigrant passengers.

Enoch married Carolina "Caroline" Lloyd on 8 Jan 1877 in Jackson County, Ohio. Together they had 13 children, with 6 of those still living in 1900. The 3 known children are as follows: Mr. Edward Enoch Griffith, Anna Griffith, and Mr. George Eaton Griffith. 2 children that were known to have died as infants in Madison, Jackson County, Ohio were fraternal twins Mamie Bell Griffiths (31 Aug 1877 - 9 Oct 1877) and Walter Emerson Griffith (31 Aug 1877 - 10 Oct 1877). Both infants died from whooping cough.

The family's last name was "Griffiths" at the time of immigration from Wales to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on 25 Sep 1864. This is the date that Enoch and his brother, Thomas, provided their declaration of intent. Enoch's father, Thomas Griffiths, also gave his oath of allegiance in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on 29 Sep 1868. In the 1870, 1880 and 1900 census the family used the last name of "Griffiths", but in 1910 they were using "Griffith" as their last name. All of the headstones in Pine Hill Cemetery indicate a last name of "Griffith".

Enoch served as the first postmaster (Postmaster #1380) for the town of Mountain Ash, Whitley County, Kentucky when the post office opened on 28 Jul 1892. He was still serving as the post master in 1894 when he received a payment in the amount of $57.22 from the United States government.

By 1900, Enoch was living in Jellico, Campbell County, Tennessee and working as a coal miner and had been unemployed for 3 months out of the last year. In 1910, he was working as an oil salesman and living with his son, George Eaton Griffith in Corbin, Whitley County, Kentucky.

I can find no documentation to indicate that Enoch ever gave an oath of allegiance to the United States. The 1910 census indicates that he was not a naturalized citizen. I believe that at the time of his death, he was still a citizen of Wales.

This is my great great grandfather.
