Ansof Hanson, 101, passed away Tuesday, November 12, 2002, at the Pioneer Medical Center in Big Timber.
Ansof was born June 25, 1901, at the homestead ranch 19 miles northeast of Melville on Tony Creek to Anton and Severine Strand. They lived in a log cabin until building a new house in 1912; this house would become her home for most of her life.
She went to a country school two miles home, traveling by buggy or walking, until attending school in Big Timber for two years.
Ansof married James Elder in 1921. they lived on Antelope Creek, the Winnecook Ranch, and a homestead a few miles east of the Strand place. Jim Elder died in 1929.
Ansof and her three daughters remained on the homestead, raising sheep and milking cows until 1936 when she married Albert Hanson and moved to the Strand ranch. They raised sheep and cattle until Albert died in 1964. She continued to live with her son James until entering Pioneer Medical Center at 98 years of age.
Ansof was a real pioneer rancher, good mother, gardener, and cook.
She is survived by her daughter Nora Hanson of Big Timber; her son, James (Diana) on the home ranch northeast of Melville; four grandchildren Carol (Kenny) O'Dell of Livingston, Kenny (Kathy) Hanson east of Melville, Steve (Gloria) Hanson of Santa Paula, CA ad Sonia (Phil) Stodden of Santa Clarita, CA; five great-grandchildren, Jim O'Dell of Fishkill, NY, Jay O"Dell of Livingston, KY, Ky Hanson of Belgrade, Kari Hanson of Park City and Andrea Hanson of Everett, WA; one sister, Inga Lesman of Billings; a step-daughter, Marie Larson of Billings; along with numerous step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, Jim Elder and Albert Hanson, daughters, Jane Hanson and Doris Elder six brothers, one sister and numerous step-children.
Funeral services will be at 1:00 p.m. Monday, November 18 in Melville with burial to follow at Mountain View Cemetery in Big timber. Memorial may be given to Melville Lutheran, Sweet Grass Museum Society, Pioneer Medical Center, or charity of your choice.
