Big Timber Pioneer, April 3, 1941
Anton A. Strand, Resident of This County Half Century, Laid to Rest Yesterday
Anton A. Strand, highly respected resident of this county for 50 years passed away Sunday at his home just north of town, aged 70 years, five months. He had been ill since December, in a Livingston hospital for a month with pneumonia, then brought to this city where he was kept until three weeks ago when he was returned home. Death was due to myocardial inefficiency, the result of pneumonia.
Lowrys had charge of the burial, funeral services being held from the Lutheran church yesterday afternoon, the Rev. Axel Anderson delivering the sermon. A male quartet composed of E. O. Overland, Dr. B. Olness, Royal Traver and Rev. Anderson sang two songs acapella. Rev. Anderson sang a Norwegian solo, with Mr. Overland at the organ. Interment was in Mountain View.
Pallbearers were: Active--Siguard T. Lavold, Sivert O. Mydiand, Silvet Raisland, Theo. S. Lavold, E. H. Ellingson, A. E. Grosfield, Honorary--Emil Wagner, Theordore Morris, Clas. Skillbred, W. J. Hannah, D. J. Walvoord, Anton Frederickson, Oskar Drivdahl, Sigurd Larson, A. A. Lamp, Ben S. Lavold, Thorval Gunderson.
An usually large attendance at the funeral and the number of floral offerings evidenced the regard of the people for a man who had lived uprightly among them for a half-century.
Anton A. Strand was born at Moi, Norway, November 1, 1870. He came to the United States 52 years ago to Shelly, Min., where he worked in the Red River valley for two years before coming on to Montana. At Melville, he made his headquarters at the Ben S. Lavold home while working for many of the big cattle outfits on Fish creek. Probably in 1897 he took up the first homestead on the creek which was named for him, Tony. Returning to Norway to claim his promised bride, he was married on March 4, 1898, at Moi, to Severine Nelson, and brought her directly to the homestead where they resided until 10 years ago, since which time they have made their home in this city.
Besides his wife he is survived by eight children; Mrs. Ansof Hanson, Fish creek; Nels and Sigurd Strnad, Ionia, Mich.; Mrs. Clarence (Inga) Slessman, Billings; Adolph Strand, Laurel; Sam Strand, Gibson; Mrs. Laurel (Sophie) Lamp, San Diego, Calif.; and Lloyd, at home. There are three grandsons and seven granddaughters.
